The UK Shostakovich Society is a registered charity and has close links with the Centre Chostakovitch in Paris and the Shostakovich family. Honorary members include Maxim Shostakovich, Lord Harewood, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Claudio Abbado, Rudolf Barshai and Alexander Lazarev; full members include Sir Edward Downes. The Fitzwilliam String Quartet, who Shostakovich gave personal permission to perform the UK premiere of his last 3 String Quartets, is the Society’s affiliated Quartet.

The composer’s widow, Irina Antonovna Shostakovich, is fully aware of the appreciation that the British public have had towards her late husband’s work, both now and in the past, and comments in a letter of support towards the UK Shostakovich Society that during the composer’s life “the serious interest in and deep understanding of Shostakovich’s music was an ever-present attribute of the British musical scene, notably thanks to many remarkable and enthusiastic performers.”
